It should be noted that a diagnosis of -- for example -- hypothyroidism in a patient with PPS-like symptoms does not rule out PPS. One would have to first treat the diagnosed condition and then determine whether the PPS symptoms are completely resolved. If they persist, the patient may have both PPS and a coexisting disease and may benefit from a treatment regimen designed to address both conditions. This diagnostic schema illustrates a general approach for determining whether a patient has PPS, or another condition, or possibly both.
