Because there are many conditions with symptoms that resemble those of PPS, and because
no diagnostic test for this disease has yet been identified, the diagnosis is currently
one of exclusion. The general criteria for PPS are: new muscle weakness and fatigue in
patients with past paralytic polio, with at least 10 years of functional stability, and
no other medical or neurologic conditions that can explain the new symptoms. Some studies
that can be done to exclude other medical and neurologic conditions include laboratory tests
such as blood workups; radiological studies; pulmonary function tests; and electromyographic
or EMG studies.
